Overview

Bàlíhm Se was founded durring the early 12th century in winter of the year 1116, by Jō̌ Cú̄tḩlär 'Pink Elodie' Rḗ̄ Mbó̄kī Ra̋chī Colliams. The establishment of Bàlíhm Se was plagued by a lack of willing colonists. After attempts to pay people to resettle failed Jō̌ Cú̄tḩlär 'Pink Elodie' Rḗ̄ Mbó̄kī Ra̋chī Colliams struck deals with nearby nations and communities to establish Bàlíhm Se as a prison colony.

Bàlíhm Se was built using the conventions of Tauric durring the early 12th century. Naturaly, all settlmentss have their own look to them, and Bàlíhm Se is no diffrent. The town's buildings feature waddle and daub construction with good timber frames and a stone foundation protected by thatched or shingled rooves. Most buildings with second floors are built in such a way as to overhang into the streets on the upper floors for more space, as building size seems to be the primary indicator of wealth within the community. Most buildings are not decorated with any integral features, but instead use ivy, flowers, and other natural elements in planters of on trellices to breathe life into the structure they grow upon.

Bàlíhm Se is is constructed arround a series of broad carved bedrock mainstreets which form concentric circles, with smaller strait roads linking the circiles to each other at varrious points. The town has a defencive wall made from large clay bricks. The wall is constructed to the exact specifications of millitary fortifications, but the nature of its clay brick construction leaves it vulnerable to even outdated siege equipment. That said, the town is well defended against anything short of an army. The town's brittle defences are visibly old, but also obviously maintained semi-regularly. Its likly the local malishia or garrison are tasked with ocasional mantance of the towns defences.

A look around Bàlíhm Se gives you an uneasy feeling. Everything is just a little too worn down, a little too dirty, or both. No one makes eye contact. Kids play quietly, but happily. Occasionally a passerby glances at you out of the corner of their eye, staring jsut long enough for it to be uncomfortable.

Cultural Notes

Bàlíhm Se's chapel was built using a different architectural style from the rest of the town. The style used is famous for its stately symmetry, classical elements, and grand appearance. Columns and pillars, such as Corinthian columns, are often seen supporting open structures or porticos. Symmetry is an important feature of this style, with each half of a building mirroring the other. Domed ceilings and windows grace these buildings, with everything placed in a mathematical arrangement.

Due to the actions of local Kami, autumn is short in Bàlíhm Se.

The Giant cockroach near Bàlíhm Se are known to be a mutant strain of the creature.

Bàlíhm Se's citizens partake in a curious ritual relating to their local kami. It takes place in summer and involves destroying a prepared ritual vessel to channel Conjuration energies of tier 1 via moments of science.

History

Almost every community has some problem with bandits and highwaymen, but Bàlíhm Se is seriously plagued with raiders. One or more groups of persistent plunderers are hitting the community repeatedly, and they lack the necessary resources to fend them off or protect all their holdings.

In time immemorial, reportedly some time during the early 2nd century, Bàlíhm Se was attacked by a renegade group of the army. The details of the conflict are hazy at best due to many conflicting accounts. What is known is Bàlíhm Se lost 126 people, 141 livestock, and 75 buildings. The conflict ended after roughly 199, when members of Bàlíhm Se's militia enacted an operation to gain control of a particular port. The operation was complicated by a key segment of the operation that deepened entirely on a stealth mission going perfectly. The conflict ended with a last stand against the enemy until a particular event occurred, which ended in a stalemate for Bàlíhm Se's forces. The war is remembered in legend by Bàlíhm Se's bards, historians, and legend keepers.
